BREAKING BAD (2013):

Firstly, it starts with a calm note by showing a desert-type place and showing the audience some shots of a big cactus and some medium-sized rock mountains, along with the non-diegetic sound of hummingbirds in the back, and then suddenly a low shot showing a pant in the air trying to reach the ground is shown which makes the audience think about the pant and creates more audience engagement.

Then the camera angle came to ground level to show the pant finally reaching the ground and an RV (truck) drives over the pants with strong diegetic sounds of the RV along with intense sounds in the background to create disequilibrium in the scene and to create audience anticipation as well.

The scene changes and the viewers could see a barely naked man from a back angle driving the RV along with wearing a gas mask which makes the audience even more anticipated for the next scene.

Following this camera angle, the next camera angle is a mid shot of the passenger seat where the audience can see a teenage boy fainted along with wearing a gas mask and having red and swollen eyes giving the audience a sense of tension and panic.

And then the driver looks back while extremely panicking and we could see two dead bodies lying on the floor of the RV with blood all over the floor and glass beakers falling and breaking as the driver was unable to drive because his gas mask was fogging up and he was struggling to clear his mask creating nail bitting tension for the audience.

More rapid editing was used to create a sense of panic for the audience and more shots of the RV and the driver struggling to drive because of the mask, with a pov shot of the driver as well to show the audience how difficult it is for the driver to drive with that sort of vision and then a long shot of the RV appears where it comes closer and crashes in a bunch of small trees.

When it crashes the intense music stops and the driver gets out of the RV with a low shot to show his feet and the liquid that is coming out of the RV and takes off the mask and breathes heavily while realizing what he’s done and throws the mask away in anger and all of this is shown by the help of a long and wide shot.

The scene cuts to a mid shot of the driver and the non-diegetic sounds of police sirens could be heard which makes him scared and makes the audience more engaged in the scene. He rushes into the RV grabs the gun from the hands of the dead person and rushes in front of the RV to take out his camera and wallet from the dashboard while pushing the teenage boy aside, gets out of the RV and spits and coughs in disgust as he was unable to breathe the bad smell of blood coming from the RV.

After this, he calms himself for the videotape he was making for his family and gets emotional while recording the clip, which shows that he thinks he is about to get arrested by the police and his life is about to end or get even more miserable.

After he records and says ‘goodbye’ he puts his wallet and the camera on a rock and walks towards the road with a tracking shot recording him and reaches the dusty road and points his gun at the end of the road while the camera is slowly coming towards his face and the gun for a closeup, to put more emphasis on his expressions and the gun. In the background, very intense music is heard making the scene even more dramatic and suspenseful.

BREAKING BAD OPENING SEQUENCE;

BLACK AND BLUE (2019):

Firstly, the opening sequence of ‘black and blue’ starts with showing the institution name (sony) along with their subsidiary company named ‘screen gems’. A voiceover of a pilot welcoming the passengers can be heard as well, which reveals the location of the movie’s narrative to the audience.

maxresdefault (3).jpg

As soon as the pilot’s voiceover comes to an end, hip-hop music starts with a forward-moving drone shot of a lake from a high angle while showing the names of the production companies and the film institution. The camera then starts a tilt movement showing the cityscape along with the appearance of the movie’s title in bold white color and contemporary font.

Intercutting an editing technique was used to switch to another camera movement and location which was a trucking movement showing big houses in a beautiful neighborhood full of greenery. The scene then cuts to a wide shot of a jogging track along with gigantic trees which indicates it's a park and from a far distance the female protagonist could be seen jogging toward the camera. When the protagonist reaches a close up it could be seen that she belongs to a black race which makes the narrative even more interesting as in media different race develops various representations and stereotypes for example, they are not respected in society and are always suspected of different crimes. In addition, a female protagonist builds audience engagement as some stereotyping of female representations exists in media such as; they are portrayed as weak or dependent but this movie has a female protagonist who belongs to a black race.

To break the typical representation of black females in media the directors and producers chose to have this identity for their protagonist which makes the narrative intriguing. Following the pan movement, a close-up of the female could be seen as this specific shot helped to show the appearance of the cop car, making the scene interesting for the viewers. The music stops when the non-diegetic police sirens are heard and a police cam POV is shown where the female protagonist could be seen from their perspective which creates a sense of trouble for the general audience.

The next scene sequence was shown by long and mid shots to introduce the appearance of the police and to reveal the location or the setting to the viewers. This scene included binary opposition between the women and men or black race VS white race and the scene portrayed that the protagonist is stopped without any reason or just because of the insane levels of racism in America and conformed the issue of suspecting black race people for any crime such as; crime or theft. However, later on in the scene the female protagonist tries to resist but fails to do so and the cop holds her to the fence where a close-up is seen to show her angry reaction, expressions, and emotions of the protagonist.

A three-shot was later on used in the scene when the fellow cop said ‘She’s blue’ which signified that the female protagonist is part of the police department as well, just off duty. Three shot helped to show the exchange of dialogue between characters and the meaning behind it. This broke the representation of black race in media hence, making the audience like the female protagonist and making the cops the bad guys in the scene. Furthermore, natural lights were used throughout the scene to conform to the outdoor setting of the first few scenes.

The camera then cuts to a long dolly movement shot of the protagonist jogging inside a cemetery and intercuts to the shot where the female protagonist stops, dramatic sounds can also be heard to make the scene more engaging and dramatic. The grave of her mother was highlighted by using an over-the-shoulder shot and the dramatic music created a sense of sympathy for the female protagonist as the grave signified the emotional attachment the character had with her mother.

After the transition, the scene showed the female protagonist wearing her police uniform in the locker room of their police department while talking to her fellow cop. An editing technique called shot reverse shot was used to put emphasis on their conversation. Her friend was a white cop, who seemed full of joy and passed positive vibes by saying ‘’ which signified that he is a great support system to the female protagonist and an energetic character in the narrative. Moreover, the mise en scene helped to identify the setting of the scene by putting lockers and using dull color grading to conform to the locker room setting.

The opening sequence ends with a tracking shot isolating the two characters while walking in a corridor and passing their fellow policemen and again upbeat hip-hop music starts while giving the last credits of the movie and convincing the audience to watch the rest of the movie.
