TYPES OF CRIME GENRE:

  • CRIME FICTIONCrime fiction, detective story, murder mystery, mystery novel, and police novels are terms used to describe narratives that center on criminal acts and especially on the investigation, either by an amateur or a professional detective, of a crime, often a murder. The best example of crime fiction is Sherlock Holmes as it portrayed a detective story and different murder situations with a touch of suspense and mystery.

  • POLICE PROCEDURAL: Police procedural is such a huge part of the mystery genre of detective fiction that focuses on the investigation process of a police officer or officers. A recently launched movie named ‘the guilty’ is the most accurate example of the crime genre as it showed a vital role of the police department in the movie.

  • TRUE CRIME: True crime is a non-fiction literary podcast, and film genre in which the author examines an actual crime and details the actions of real people associated with and affected by criminal events. These crimes most commonly include murder, and about 40 percent focus on tales of serial killers. A true-crime podcast known as ‘tales of the grim sleeper’ is a very famous movie telling us about a dangerous serial killer.

  • MYSTERY: Mystery is a fiction genre where the nature of an event, usually a murder or other crime, remains mysterious until the end of the story. Often within a closed circle of suspects, each suspect is usually provided with a credible motive and a reasonable opportunity for committing the crime. An example of this genre is Fargo (1996) as it includes a mystery that is solved in the end and made the audience excited for the end of the narrative.
